《特洛伊之歌》（The Song of Troy）

應該沒有人沒聽過木馬屠城的故事吧？希臘聯軍與特洛伊久戰未決，於是
前者想出一計。某天清晨，特洛伊守城士兵發現盤據在城外的希臘聯軍居然全
部消失，只留下一匹巨大木馬在原來敵軍駐守之處。特洛伊人以為十年久戰之
後，希臘人終於知難而退。在歡慶時，將木馬搬進城裡作為戰利品，無視女祭
司卡珊德拉的警告。當晚，在特洛伊人慶功完畢休息後，從佇立在城中的巨大
木馬內部湧出許多希臘士兵，殺了守城的特洛伊人，將城門打開，特洛伊城便
在此一夜陷落。
以上是木馬屠城記的基本故事，也是大多數人知道的部分。但事實上，這
只是整個古希臘關於希臘聯軍以及特洛伊之間的愛恨情仇史的一小部分。在文
學上有Homer史詩Iliad與Odysseus、Aeschylus包括Agamemnon在內
的三部劇等在內的上古文學經典講述城落之前的起因以及城落之後希臘諸英雄
或悲或喜的遭遇。藉著這些文獻，爭執女神Eris引起的三女神的競美（Athen
、Hera以及Aphrodite）、對特洛伊王子Paris的賄賂、斯巴達王妻Helen的
被擄以及Menelaus號召希臘聯軍追回、Agamemnon為求艦隊順利遠行而
將女兒獻祭以息Artemis之怒、Achillles的被辱、特洛伊王子Hector與髮妻
Andromache的深情以及Hector戰死後，老王Priam獨自前往希臘軍營、求
回愛子遺體的老淚縱橫，加上在這些人與人的爭奪背後，希臘諸神的勾心鬥角
，彷彿現實一般，重現在讀者面前。
今天下午和朋友喝完下午茶後，偕同他去附近的簡體字書店晃。原本並沒
有打算帶什麼書走，只是在朋友找書、自己在店裡四處張望，打發時間時，在
書架上驚見一本標題為《特洛伊之歌》（The Song of Troy）的書。因著大
四修「西洋文學概論」之故，我對古希臘史詩、劇本所傳遞至今的古代傳說有
著難以言喻的著迷，便把它從架上拿下來翻，卻又意外地發現另一個驚喜：竟
是我小學期間最鐘愛的小說《刺鳥》的作者Colleen McCulloug於1998年以
前述故事為架構，寫成的最新小說。
從上研究所迄今，每過一段時間我總是會到公館一帶的簡體字書店晃晃，
隨心情、興趣以及學習需要買些不期而遇的書回去。但這些書大抵是歷史或是
社會學類的著作。因著文字用法以及閱讀樂趣的考量，我比較不喜歡讀對岸譯
者翻譯的外國小說（所以《諸神復活》從圖書館借回來到現在，我還是沒真的
想要去讀它）。但對Iliad故事的深愛（我記得我大一讀到當Hector要上戰場
一段，與Andromache道別，夫妻二人離情依依、不知能否重逢一段時，居
然忍不住流下眼淚）和因《刺鳥》對McCullough新做的期待，以及繁體字版
不知何年何月才能得見的不確定感，我未考慮多久便決定將它買下，相信作者
必能重現昔日戰役的浩大以及古希臘英雄的風采，並藉著小說筆法與結構，賦
予史詩人物性格更鮮明的色彩

clung to his hand, urged him, called him: "Reckless one,
my Hector - your own fiery courage will destroy you!
Have you no pity for him, our helpless son? Oor me,
and the destiny that weighs me down, your widow,
now so soon. Yes, soon they will kill you off,
all the Achaean forces massed for assault, and then,
bereft of you, better for me to sink beneath the earth.
What other warmth, what comfort's left for me,
once you have met your doom? Nothing but torment!
I have lost my father. Mother's gone as well.

You, Hector - you are my father now, my noble mother,
a brother too, and you are my husband, young and warm and strong!
Pity me, please! Take your stand on the rampart here,
before you orphan your son and make your wife a widow...."
And tall Hector nodded, his helmet flashing:
"All this weighs on my mind too, dear woman.
But I would die of shame to face the men of Troy
and the Trojan women trailing their long robes
if I would shrink from battle now, a coward......."
